Why are we choosing to home school our kids?

Why are we choosing to home school our children?

I've always wanted to take a active part in my children's education. When it came time for Callum to commence preschool, Mike and I raised the issue of home schooling, but at the time, things were financially tougher, we had just bought our house, Mike was working a minium wage job and we needed to be a two income family.

We did what we thought best. Checked out all the local schools between the local area and even close to our workplaces and 'settled' on the school we thought would best reflect our ideals of a 'good' education. We drove 'out of our way', past 4 other schools to give our children the 'best start' in life.

Needless to say we ended up moving the kids 3 years ago to the 'local school' 10mins away due to Callum enduring major bulling issues that the school refused to address (a whole other post there!). The small local school, (which at the time we were looking at schools had a very bad name for itself) has been fantastic. My kids are doing well, the girls are A grade students, Callum's grades have improved with each report card and the teachers are generous in their praise of our children. Any bulling issues that should arise, are minor and are dealt with very swiftly and effectively by the Behaviour Management Specialist at the school. When it comes down to it, its a 'good' school.

So why would we want to home school our children??

I've been wanting to home school since we started to think about our children's education. I really enjoy being with our children and want to be a very active participate in their education.

Now that we have experienced the 'school system' I really think that it fails to cater for every child's need. Both Livia and Aliya excel in their school work, working above their year levels, and therefore get really bored with the work they are given. Instead of being challenged they are given colouring in sheets or run errands for the teachers when they have completed work ahead of the class. Callum on the other had will not 'set his mind' to a task if it doesn't interest him, and will rush through his work and present it 'just to have it over and done with' so he can play with his mates. For example, Callum received a D on his report card for computer studies. Now Callum knows as much if not more about computers as he has his own laptop. But he failed as he needed to create a document on word and present it to the teacher. Callum didn't ask for assistance, rushed and presented a report on something he was not interested in, and I guess the teacher who has 30 kids to juggle, didn't get round to following up with Callum about his lack of effort. And I mean that is fair enough, Callum has been told by both the teachers and I that even though it may not be his favourite topic, the work needs to be completed to the best of his ability.
This is where I think home schooling will be beneficial. Callum will be able to do a word report on a topic 'of interest' and be able to demonstrate his abilities using a computer.

With class sizes ranging from 25-30, I feel that teachers are being stretched too thinly. Home schooling should allow me to spend a lot of one on one time with the children so that they are able to really take in what they are learning and I'll be able to cater to their learning styles and have a chance to really focus and take in what they are learning.

The last few months of Callum's schooling has lead me to wonder about the curriculum that the children are learning. I found out near the end of term that the class was to present a speech on drug use. The children had to research the pro's and con's of a variety of drugs, marijuana, street drugs, binge drinking, chroming, just to name a few. I understand that in today's society, many youth will be exposed to this, but is it necessary for 11-12 yr olds to know this sort of information? Callum picked binge drinking, and even after all his 'research' didn't know what it was! This question was raised when he was practising his speech for me. (A term of research and presentation was wasted on this effort, he also got a D for this section of work)

Hopefully you have gotten this far. I didn't realise my ramblings would take so long! I will add a part 2 to better explain our reason for home schooling :)

Meet me on Mondays

Questions:

1. What is your favourite food?
2. What colour scheme is your bedroom?
3. Do you carry a donor card?
4. In your opinion, is the glass half empty or half full?
5. Vanilla or Chocolate?
---------------------------------------------------------------

1. What is your favourite food?

I would have to say my all time favourite food is Thai. I love the light, fresh and ultra tasty experience of having a Beef Thai Salad and Pineapple Fried Rice is to die for!!

2. What colour scheme is your bedroom?

Our (Mine and Mikes) bedroom would be the only room in the house without a colour scheme!! I have very neutral colours in there apart from the purple feature wall that is!! Other then that I don't decorate in there at all! (Its on my list of things to do)

3. Do you carry a donor card?

One of my greatest fears is my own demise :( The thought of being 'away' from those I love is very confronting and something I don't like to even think about! But that being said, those around me know that if it came down to it, I am pro-donor. But I don't carry a card........

4. In your opinion, is the glass half empty or half full?

I am most definitely a glass half full sort of girl! I always like to try to see the best in a bad situation and make the most of it. I try not to let things get me down or dwell too deeply on the negative side of things :)

5. Vanilla or Chocolate?

Yes, I can see that the most important question was left for last! lol! I used to be a chocolate sort of gal, but now that I am 'more mature' I can appreciate a good quality full cream, vanilla bean ice cream, not that flavoured vanilla crap though lol.

I found this fun little link up and meet at MahliMoo: Meet Me on Monday who in turn found it at http://nevergrowingold.blogspot.com

Enjoy :)

San Choy Bau

This is one of our families favourite meals :) Everyone including Kadee who is 20mths old enjoys eating it! And its also healthy and light.

San Choy Bau

2kgs of lean pork mince
1 large red capsicum chopped up finely
1 bunch of shallots chopped up finely
2 small tins of water chestnuts drained, chopped up finely
1 heaped tsp of garlic
1 heaped tsp of ginger
1/2 c soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1/2 c oyster sauce

2 large iceberg lettuces (leaves washed and pulled apart into 'cups')
1 pkt glass noodles prepared as per packet ( not in the traditional reciepe but I add it to help 'fill the kids up')

Brown capsicum, shallots, garlic and ginger in sesame oil. Add pork, cook until browned. Add soy and oyster sauces. Simmer for 5 or so minuets to let flavours combine.

Get a lettuce leaf and pile a helping of mince and/or noodles. Wrap and eat :) I like to place everything onto the table so that everyone can help themselves :)

This was enough to feed 5 kids and 4 adults.

Happy 12th Birthday Callum!!

My first born son is 12 years old!! 12 YEARS!!! It barely seems like yesterday that I was in labour! I have to say that I am very, very lucky and blessed to have such a wonderful, handsome and caring son!! This year for his birthday he still wanted toys :) Halo figurines, so we went on a mission to Toys r Us to pick some out. He also got some money to go and purchase his own from the local toy store. I guess its good that he still enjoys the simple things and not expensive gadgets most tweens like!

Every birthday, depending when it falls (school night or not) we have a special dinner at home and also a night out at their favourite place to eat. This year we had San Choy Bau for our at home dinner (which Livia gracefully modelled for me) and we went to http://www.guzmanygomez.com/Menu/Tacos as Callum has a thing for Mexican food :) Its great that my kids will pretty much eat any foods from any nationality!! And that they love to try new things :) And the kids love to request a fresh, home made cake over getting a store bought cake. The cake was straight out of the oven, frosted and candles shoved straight in!! You can even see the frosting melting over the side in one of the pics! The only thing is that the candles melted on the ends cause the cake was so hot!! Sure did give the cake that extra bit of texture!! lol!

We love you very much Callum and I hope you had a fantastic time for your birthday!!

Just a little about me

Did you want to know something Bizarre!

I totally love organising. Though I might not look like the most organised person or have the most organised house or even have the most organised life.

I especially love reading organising blogs and trying to emulate their little organising tips into my life!!

One blog I love to read regularly is http://www.beyondthebaby.com.au/superorganisermum/

I could only dream to be as organised as she is!!

I first came across this amazing woman while reading up on tread about organisation on the Essential Baby forum http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/forums/index.php?showforum=89 , I 'hang out' in the large family section lol :)

Small Success Thursday

Small Success Thursday Quote

I think it quite fitting that I start with a inspiring quote that reflects the moment, even if it doesn't seem to reflect anything related to my small successes :)

If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it :)

Profound:
Realising that its Thursday again ALREADY! And when I reflect back on the week, I feel like its rushed on by without me doing anything! A lot of nothing really!!
Mundane:
Lots of sleepless nights due to Braith and Kaydence not sleeping well.
More Mundane:
Trying to get motivated in the mornings, the winter cold is making it a struggle to get everyone up and going!
Delightful:
Getting the kids report cards from school yesterday and seeing both the girls ACE their subjects, with lots of A's and some B's. And feeling really proud of Callum for getting a lot of C's, B's and even a few A's!! (last year we had mostly D's due to his 'lack of effort'). So proud of my 3 little smarty pants!!
Cute:
Kadee sitting on my lap giving me big monkey cuddles and patting my back while I type :) Such a huggie little kid :)
Always a Treat:
Organising to have a impromptu lunch with a couple of my closest mates for my birthday next weekend :)
Good News Even if it's Not Great News:
Not sure this week......We have school holidays coming up, so perhaps good news for us not having to rush out in the mornings, not so great as I will have 7 kids at home to 'entertain' lol :)

WW - Wordless Wednesday

Just wondering if anyone knew what this plant is? I picked it from the local community gardens so I think it is edible. Its not from a mulberry tree, it was on a vine like plant, the stem quite thick, almost like a water plant, doesn't have a woody 'branch' if u know what I mean......

ps and no I don't know what it tastes like! I wasn't brave enough to try it lol!

hummmmm might have to work on my next WW so that it is actually wordless! ;)

Its Offical, home schooling here we come!!

The official announcement as been made to family and friends!! We will be home schooling next year starting with Callum, who will be in year 8.

I have been 'toying' with the idea of home schooling since Callum started school, having been introduced to the concept via various natural parenting forums. I ended up going against our initial decision to home school due to a variety of reasons, lack of real life support (I still don't know anyone in real life who home school), lack of family support (which I hope will change over time) and just being generally unsure of how to get home schooling resources and support. Can you see the common theme? lol!!

I've started researching on the curriculum that we will be putting together, based on the KLA's and of course what Callum is most interested in. Tomorrow I will be requesting a registration kit from the Department of Education and Training, which I guess will be our first official step in our home schooling journey.

The other children wanted to start home schooling ASAP, but I'm concerned that perhaps home schooling 4 children, while still getting my head around it all might be a bit overwhelming and result in unhappiness for everyone.

The feed back I've from everyone has been quite what I expected.......

- how will the children make friends?
- are you crazy!?!
- what about getting a break from the kids?
- how can they learn at home?
- only naughty, expelled kids are home schooled
- you don't have the time to run the home, raise the children let alone school them
- how will they find there future boyfriends/girlfriends? (Callum's mates even declared that he will be a virgin for life! I didn't know kids went to school to lose their virginity! lol!! the minds of 12 yr old boys hey?)

But now that I'm older and more resilient (I don't assume to be wiser lol) all this is water off a ducks back!

I can't wait for 2012!

7 Quick Takes Friday

— 1 —

Tonight I have 9 kids, the oldest 3, have friends sleeping over. Out of 9 kids I currently have 3 sleeping, 4 watching movies and 2 chatting away in bed. Its 10pm, yawn!

— 2 —
Tomorrow we have to be on the other side of town (40min drive) for Callum's Soccer Game. With 9 kids and I also have to pick up another mum and her son. So in the 'car' will be 12 of us. On a 40min car ride.
Need I say more?

— 3 —
The 1st pea and ham soup of the winter has been made and is simmering away on the stove. Delish!

— 4 —
I can hear the big boys laughing themselves silly at the movie they are watching, its amazing how everyone of them as a different laugh.

— 5 —
The sun is susposed to be shining this weekend, I can't wait to get out in the veggie patch and start preparing it for planting :)

— 6 —
Mini achievement for the night would be getting the kitchen cleaned while running around after the 9 kidlets.

— 7 —
Finally time to myself to catch up on some blogs with a cuppa tea, just in time for Braith and Kadee to wake up 1000 times throughout the night.

Just to let you know I stumble across this at http://aussiecoffeeshop.blogspot.com

Small Success Thursday

Small Success Thursday

I think it quite fitting that I start with a inspiring quote that reflects the moment, even if it doesn't seem to reflect anything related to my small successes :)

Don't be a thermometer, be a thermostat. Thermometers only measure the temperature around them. Thermostats change it.

Profound:
Discovering home education websites that are local and relevant for our family so that I can finally start our home education journey
Mundane:
The huge pile of folding that needs to be tackled
More Mundane:
The rest of the chores that I need to 'catch up'
Delightful:
Looking back on pictures of the kids when they were younger, its amazing how fast the years are passing by
Cute:
Watching Kadee trying to round up the chickens, legs and arms spread wide, yelling NO NO, so much confidence for her age :)
Always a Treat:
My brother buying me a chocolate bar, that I have never bought before because I thought I wouldn't like it, but I have now discovered it could be a new favourite
Good News Even if it's Not Great News:
Finding out that it was due to rain on birthday in a few weeks time, which means a reschedule as I am going to hire a jumping castle.....but I want to reschedule for warmer weather so we can fully enjoy ourselves :) I'm going to be the same age for the whole year so I don't mind when we celebrate :)

Fat vs Thin

http://shareitfitness.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/250lbs-woman-vs-120lbs-woman/

Great illustration of why people need to keep their body weights down, not just for the outside but the inside as well.

Fat runs in my family. My Mum, Dad, well are 'big boned'. As a teen I was athletic and very trim, played soccer, rugby union, competed in school sports, karate and rowing were my favourites. Thin was easy.

I still love sports but 6 babies later my body is neither athletic nor trim. Now fat is easy. Easier to shove whatever into my mouth and chores seem to takeover my 'exercise' time. But I'm lucky, lucky that I have a family that enjoy healthy eating, and doesn't ask for fatty take out. Lucky I have friends that are fitness minded and motivate me to become a fitter, healthier version of myself.

New Blog :)

Yay for pimping out my blog!!! I just might end up being a computer nerd! Nah! Mike helped me out with all the html stuff (thanks honey), otherwise I would still be looking at the rather plain blog I used to have.

Just like buying a glossy new diary, now time to get a new keyboard where the space bar doesn't keep sticking! ;)

Small Success Thursday

So I've been browsing the world of blogs again, just looking, getting inspired, you all know how it is sometimes.........

I'm going to have a go at linking up with some lovely blogs out there that I have found inspiring of late.

I have newly found a blog called Chocolate for your Brain, which I have found appealing to me as a fellow large family blogger.

Small Success Thursday

Mother Teresa said to do little things with great love, and sometimes when we're in the midst of doing, we forget the great love; and sometimes when we're in the midst of being that great love to others, we forget that this is actually a great thing we are doing. With that in mind, once a week we look back to see if we've come perhaps a smidgen closer to doing all those little things lovingly.

Profound:
My youngest brother Jason stepping up and watching my 6 kids for me while I was in hospital, so that Mike could work so that we didn't fall behind in the bills.
Mundane:
Sitting in hospital waiting to hear results as to why I was in so much pain
More Mundane:
The washing pile needing to be tackled now that I'm back home
Delightful:
The cuddles and smiles from everyone when I came home from hospital.
Cute:
Seeing all the kids playing together nicely making cubby houses in the yard (ban on computers this week lol)
Always a Treat:
Mike making spaghetti bog when I was feeling too sick to make dinner. (He is not a fan)
Good News Even if it's Not Great News:
Finding out that the cause of my pain was from a kidney infection, which I had always thought I would only suffer from when pregnant.....now I know that is not the case and is something I will have to be mindful about.

Large Families a drain on the enviroment??

Perhaps some are. Perhaps families with 1 child are. Perhaps singles are. But when our family as a general rule follow the motto....

Use it up; wear it out; make it do or do without!

............in a way I guess our environmental footprint is comparable to other 'normal size' families out there.
